Abbie David

By distorting normative conventions of gender identity and structure, Abbie’s practice seeks to highlight and question this social construct. Through transmorphing typically gendered symbols and forms, her work explores the possibility of life without gender constraints, as Micheal Bronski stated: “a vivacious and joyful template for how we can transform the world into a place that no longer depends upon norms, and values maverick improvisations of difference and freedom”. Her practice lends itself to bold, Pop Art colours, whilst employs psychedelic undertones to truly convey a transformed, refreshed idea of gender identity. Her work frequently uses items that distort the viewers perception, such as kaleidoscopes, mirrors and disassembled objects, referencing to the breaking down of gender structures, and the possibility of a new life without this hierarchal system.
